I've had some success playing Settlers IV on Windows 8.1 64-bit with. The current release (0.5.2) almost works - just some minor graphics corruption which is already fixed for the next release.I burnt 6 hours yesterday smashing the dark tribe!There is just one other minor issue - from time to time, the display either gets lots of blacked out areas or seems to freeze. To resolve, you need to switch back to the desktop and back to Settlers - ie.:. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. Hit Esc. Switch back to SettlersHope this helps. Haven't played this game in many years, so I found it on Amazon, and bought it.
I installed it and patched it to '2.50.1516.' I tried to run it, but the screen flashes through a series of resolutions, then produces an error saying it can't initialize 3D software and hardware. I have DirectX-11 installed.It was a shot in the dark hoping this would work in the first place. What are some things I can try or is this just impossible?Thanks for any help in advance:-) No answer? It won't let me login using my nick and pw. How is anybody getting this game to work on newer computers or laptops?

Running windows 10, even after doing everything that has been suggested the game still would not work for me without these few additional steps that I would like to share in case it will help someone else out. Right clicking settlers IV and go to properties. On the compatibilities tab I had to run compatible with win xp sp3. Further down under settings i had to check 'reduced color mode' the drop down arrow under this i selected '8 bit (256) color'. Then clicked 'run as administrator'.
Then before attempting to open the game I would have to change my screen resolution to '1024 x 768'. I would then open the game and it would work.
